What Is a Sound Bath? A Beginner's Guide

By Kayla, founder of Chime & Flow

If you've been hearing the words "sound bath" a lot lately and wondering what on earth it actually means, you're in the right place. I get this question all the time, and I love answering it, because the gap between what people imagine and what they actually experience is one of the most satisfying things about this work.

So let me walk you through everything you need to know before you come.

First things first, you don't get wet

A sound bath has nothing to do with water. The "bath" refers to being bathed in sound, layers of resonant, live-played frequencies that wash over and through your body. You lie down, close your eyes, and let the sound do the work.

That's it. No experience needed. No spiritual framework required. Just you, a mat, and an open mind.

What actually happens in a sound bath?

You arrive, take off your shoes, and find your mat. I'll usually give a brief introduction covering what to expect, how to position yourself, and what's completely normal to feel. Then you lie down and we begin.

Over the next 60 minutes I play a carefully chosen combination of instruments, crystal singing bowls, Himalayan bowls, gongs, chimes, and percussion, moving intuitively through the space and adjusting in real time to what the room needs.

Some people fall into a deep sleep-like state within minutes. Some feel waves of emotion they weren't expecting. Some see colours or images. Some just feel profoundly, inexplicably calm. All of it is normal. All of it is welcome.

My one piece of guidance before every session: come with an open mind and an open heart. Nothing else is needed.

What are the instruments and what do they do?

Crystal singing bowls are made from pure quartz crystal and produce a sustained, resonant tone when played. Different bowls are tuned to different frequencies, and those frequencies interact with the body's nervous system to promote calm, clarity, and emotional release.

Himalayan singing bowls are hand-hammered metal bowls with a warmer, more complex sound. They create a deep grounding quality that many people describe as feeling held or anchored.

Gongs produce a vast, immersive wall of sound that is particularly effective for deep energetic release. I use these occasionally and always with intention. They're powerful instruments.

Chimes, rainsticks, and percussion add texture and movement to the soundscape, gently guiding the nervous system between states.

All instruments are played live and with intention. No recordings, no playlists. Every session is different.

Is there science behind it?

Yes, and this is the part I love talking about, because sound healing is often dismissed as "woo woo" until people understand what's actually happening physiologically.

The main mechanism is brainwave entrainment. Our brains naturally synchronise to external rhythmic stimuli, a phenomenon called the frequency following response. The sustained tones of singing bowls guide the brain from its typical waking state (beta waves) into deeper states associated with relaxation and meditation (alpha and theta waves). This is the same state you reach in deep meditation or just before sleep, and most people find it much easier to access through sound than through sitting still and trying to clear their mind.

Studies have also shown that sound healing sessions reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), lower heart rate and blood pressure, and support the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of your nervous system responsible for rest, digestion, and recovery.

In short: your body responds to sound whether you believe in it or not. The science works on everyone.

What will I feel?

Honestly, it varies, and that's part of what makes this work so fascinating.

Some people feel a profound physical heaviness, like their body has finally been given permission to stop. Some feel tingling or warmth moving through different parts of the body. Some experience vivid imagery, almost dreamlike. Some feel an unexpected wave of emotion. Tears are genuinely common, and genuinely welcome.

A smaller number of people, particularly on their first visit, feel very little in the session itself, and then notice something has shifted in the hours or days that follow. Better sleep. A quieter mind. A sense of having processed something they couldn't name.

Whatever you feel, or don't feel, is exactly right for you.

Do I need any experience?

None whatsoever. Sound healing is one of the most accessible wellness modalities that exists. It requires no physical ability, no prior meditation practice, no spiritual belief system. You simply show up and receive.

I've had seasoned meditators tell me a sound bath goes deeper than years of sitting practice. I've had complete sceptics leave in quiet disbelief at what they felt. I've had people who haven't slept properly in months fall into the most restorative rest of their year.

The only thing I ask is that you come with an open mind and an open heart. Nothing else is needed.

Where do I go?

I host group sound bath sessions in London, primarily at We the Conscious studio, as well as other locations around the city. Sessions are 60 minutes and open to all levels.

I also offer private sound ceremonies for groups, hen dos, birthdays, corporate teams, and intimate gatherings, and 1:1 sessions for those who want a more personal experience.

Prices start from £30 per person for group sessions.

I'm ready, what next?

The best way to experience a sound bath is simply to come. Reading about it will only take you so far. This is something that needs to be felt.

You can browse upcoming sessions and book your spot at the link below. If you have any questions beforehand, I'm always happy to hear from you.

Come with an open mind and an open heart. I'll take care of the rest.
